How to Use a Mirror to Improve Your Golf Swing

One of the reasons developing your swing is so hard is that most of the golf swing takes place behind your back where you can’t see it. Swinging in front of a mirror can help solve that problem, as well as help you in other ways.

First, you have to get a mirror. The best choice is to get a full-length mirror on a stand. You can buy one at a furniture store for about the price of a round of golf.

Set the mirror up in a place where you can swing a club while facing it and while standing to one side (a “down-the-line” view). Draw a vertical line down the center of the mirror with a black felt pen. You’re ready to go.

The first thing you can use the mirror for is to check your setup. Get a photograph of a professional golfer of similar size and build to yours and compare your setup from the front with the photo. Work on getting into the same position comfortably.

Then check your setup from the side. You should be able to find photos of pros from this angle, too. As before, learn to make your image in the mirror look like the photo.

It will be generally true that a good-looking athletic setup is a good setup. This is a quick way to get one.

Your swing happens too fast for you to analyze it in a mirror, but you can check yourself at certain positions. For each of the position checks that follow, swing into that position so that you assume it as your swing would naturally have you do.

First, check your takeaway, from the side, by stopping where the shaft is parallel to the ground. The club should be pointing right at the mirror and the leading edge of the clubhead should be pointing straight down to the ground.

Swing up to the top of the backswing and check there (side view). The club should be parallel to your stance, and the clubface should be parallel to your left arm (right arm, for lefties). The view from the front should show a complete shoulder turn.

Check yourself coming down (side view) at the point where the club is pointing at the mirror again, but do this in motion. Just swing back and forth slowly to watch the club travel between your arms. The club should move through this position in a way that splits the gap between your two arms in half. If the club passes too close to your right arm, you will tend to hook. Too close to your left arm and a slice is born.

Check impact from the front. This is the most important position in golf. It would be best to check yourself against photographs once more. Imitation is the key to success here, and the mirror will help you get into the best impact position you can.

Remember that line I asked you to draw? One of the keys to a good swing is to have a constant spine angle. The line in the mirror helps you establish that angle at address and evaluate your success in keeping that same angle set through impact.

When we perform any physical skill, two things are true. We all think we’re doing it right, and we all think we look good doing it. The mirror doesn’t lie, however.

You’ve seen enough golf to know what a good swing looks like. You have the photos. Now take a close look at yourself and practice until the ideal swing you have in your head shows up in the mirror.
